Psalm 1:2-3
2.But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. 3. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither, and whatever he does shall prosper.
I have always loved these verses. For me it said, if you read God's word each day, spend time with Him then all you do will prosper. I think though it goes a little deeper than that. I am reading Godprint by Skip Heitzig, and we were to memorize verse 3. I was thinking that memorizing verse 3 without verse 2 seemed a little silly to me. I mean what does all this mean without verse 2? Then thoughts just started flowing into my heart about these two little verses and they really do tell a much larger picture!
~He shall be like a tree~ For me a tree is huge, sturdy, strong, deeply rooted, able to withstand the huge storms of life. I think this is the exact picture of a person who meditates on God and His word each day, don't you?
~Planted by the rivers of water~ A trees main nourishment is sun and water. Life giving water, the tree can not survive without it. To be planted by the rivers of water means to never be without what gives you life. If we are walking with God everyday then we are being nourished by the wonderful flow of the Holy Spirit!
~That brings forth fruit in its season~ A tree that bares fruit is a wonderful thing. Think about a beautiful pecan tree. How happy are you when you can go out and pick up those wonderful pecans and bake a pie for those you love? How dissappointed you would be if it just stopped producing fruit! We, as God's children, are to bare fruit, we are to strive to live as Jesus did, to love and serve others and to bring others to Christ Jesus. If we are
meditating on God's word throughout the day, we will be strong and deeply rooted into the life giving water of the Holy Spirit and we will bring forth amazing fruit for our Father!
~Whose leaf also shall not whither~ What happens to a leaf when it whithers? It fades, dies, and falls from the tree. It is separated from what gives it life and it dies. If we are spending time with God each day our soul is filled with the Holy Spirit and it is growing, blooming, and producing fruit. On the other hand if we do not spend time with our Father our soul whithers.
YOU know what I am talking about. We have all felt it.
We know what it feels like when we are in God's presence each day and we know how it feels when we slack off and miss that wonderful connection with God. I can tell a difference if I go one day without reading God's word. If I go a week without sitting down with my Bible and praying and reading and meditating, I can FEEL it in my soul. I can FEEL Satan closing in thinking that he may have a chance! Thinking he can shake the foundation, slow the water flow, stop the fruit, and whither my soul. Think how much he has to gain by just catching you at the right moment and distracting you from God even for a week or so! How many lives could you have touched for God during that time?
God tells us in this verse that if we will delight in spending time learning about Him and meditate on Him we will have a strong foundation in Him, the constant flow of the Holy Spirit, wonderful fruit, and a blossoming soul that Satan will not be able to stand against!!! AMEN!!!
~And we shall prosper in all that we do~
